Descrição: This gene encodes one of several forms of glutamic acid decarboxylase, identified as a major autoantigen in insulin-dependent diabetes. The enzyme encoded is responsible for catalyzing the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid from L-glutamic acid. A pathogenic role for this enzyme has been identified in the human pancreas since it has been identified as an autoantibody and an autoreactive T cell target in insulin-dependent diabetes. This gene may also play a role in the stiff man syndrome. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants that encode the same protein. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2008]

Descrição: Spermatogenesis represents the intricate developmental process of mitotic and meiotic cell divisions that ultimately leads to the production of haploid spermatozoa. BOULE, a member of the human deleted in azoospermia (DAZ) family, functions as a key conserved switch that regulates the progression of germ cells through meiosis in man. BOULE is an RNA-binding protein that regulates the expression of twine, a Cdc25 phosphatase, which promotes progression through meiosis. BOULE is expressed not only in the testis, but also in the nervous system, where it may play a role in neural communication. Mutations in the BOULE gene are be associated with male infertility, and the relative proportions of the three BOULE isoforms (B1, B2 and B3) may function as predictive markers for meiotic efficiency.

Descrição: Relaxin is a peptide hormone produced by the corpora lutea of ovaries during pregnancy in many mammalian species, including man. The secretion of the hormone into the blood stream just before parturition results in a marked softening and lengthening of the pubic symphysis and a softening of the cervix, which facilitates the birth process. By inhibiting uterine contractions, relaxin may influence the timing of parturition. Like insulin, relaxin consists of two peptide chains, A and B, covalently linked by disulfide bonds. By further analogy to insulin, the two peptides are synthesized as a single-chain precursor polypeptide with the B chain at the NH2-terminus.

Descrição: Amphiphysin is associated with the cytoplasmic surface of synaptic vesicles. A subset of patients with stiff man syndrome who were also affected by breast cancer are positive for auto against this protein. Alternate splicing of this gene results in two transcript variants (Amphiphysin 1 and Amphiphysin 2) encoding different isoforms. Additional splice variants have been described, but their full length sequences have not been determined.

Descrição: The correlation of anti-sperm with cases of unexplained infertility implicates a role for these in blocking fertilization. Improved diagnosis and treatment of immunologic infertility, as well as identification of proteins for targeted contraception, are dependent on the identification and characterization of relevant sperm antigens. The protein expressed by this gene is recognized by anti-sperm from an infertile man. This protein localizes to the tail of permeabilized human sperm and contains eight contiguous armadillo repeats, a motif known to mediate protein-protein interactions. Studies in mice suggest that this protein is involved in sperm flagellar motility and maintenance of the structural integrity of mature sperm. Several transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2011].
