Descrição: BEND4 is a 530 amino acid protein that contains a BEN domain. BEND4 exists as five alternatively spiced isoforms and is considered a complete proteome. BEN domain mediates proteinDNA and proteinprotein interactions during chromatin organization and transcription. BEN domain may play a role in organization of viral DNA during replication or transcription. The BEND4 gene maps to human chromosome 4p13. Representing approximately 6% of the human genome, chromosome 4 contains nearly 900 genes. Chromosome 4 reportedly contains the largest gene deserts (regions of the genome with no protein encoding genes) and has one of the two lowest recombination frequencies of the human chromosomes. Notably, the Huntingtin gene, which is found to encode an expanded glutamine tract in cases of Huntington's disease, is on chromosome 4. FGFR-3 is also encoded on chromosome 4 and has been associated with thanatophoric dwarfism, achondroplasia, Muenke syndrome and bladder cancer.

Descrição: ANKRD17 is a 2,603 amino acid protein that contains 25 ankyrin repeats and one KH domain. ANKRD17 is expressed in bone marrow and is thought to be involved in liver development. ANKRD17 localizes to the cytoplasm and the nucleus. ANKRD17 exists as five alternatively spliced isoforms that are encoded by a gene which maps to human chromosome 4. Representing approximately 6% of the human genome, chromosome 4 contains nearly 900 genes. Chromosome 4 is also tied to Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, methylmalonic acidemia and polycystic kidney disease. Chromosome 4 reportedly contains the largest gene deserts (regions of the genome with no protein encoding genes) and has one of the two lowest recombination frequencies of the human chromosomes.

Descrição: Polycomb group (PcG) proteins form multiprotein complexes that regulate expression patterns of developmental and cell proliferation genes. Several members of the PcG contain ring finger domains and are identified as a subclass of RING finger proteins. The RING-type zinc finger motif is present in a number of viral and eukaryotic proteins and is made of a conserved cysteine-rich domain that is able to bind two zinc atoms. Proteins that contain the RING-type zinc finger conserved domain are generally involved in the ubiquitination pathway of protein degradation. PCGF3 (polycomb group ring finger 3), also known as RNF3, DONG1 or RNF3A, is a 242 amino acid transcriptional regulator that is encoded by a gene located on human chromosome 4, which encodes nearly 6% of the human genome and has the largest gene deserts (regions of the genome with no protein encoding genes) of all of the human chromosomes. PCGF3 exists as two isoforms produced by alternative splicing events.

Descrição: Indian hedgehog (IHH) is one of three proteins in the hedgehog family which includes sonic hedgehog and desert hedgehog. Hedgehog proteins are important signaling molecules, acting through patched and smoothened receptors. During embryonic development, they are expressed in the fetal lung, gut, stomach, liver, kidney, and pancreas. IHH is strongly expressed in cartilage and regions of developing bone, and its signaling regulates growth and differentiation of bone tissue (Marigo et al.; Valentini et al.; St-Jacques et al.). IHH is also involved in yolk sac vasculogenesis, indicating a role in the differentiation of epiblast cells into endothelial and red blood cells (Byrd et al.). IHH induces the expression of parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP), which negatively regulates IHH during chondrocyte differentiation and proliferation (Vortkamp et al.).
